massaging scar tissue will help break it down and soften it

"Once your wound has healed you can massage your scar regularly. Start slowly by applying gentle pressure and build up towards a firmer pressure as you become more confident massaging and the area feels less tender."

Massage is an effective way to decrease scar tissue build-up and become comfortable with your scar, helping you to reconnect with your body and appreciate what it has done.

During the healing process, the appearance of scars can vary from being quite prominent to almost invisible. Because scar tissue forms slowly, however, it can be encouraged to form flatter and softer by using a scar massaging technique. Although many women report never being told they could massage their scar, using a simple scar-massaging technique can help reduce the appearance and increase the integrity of the scar.

For an effective massage, our expert midwives have developed the Super Scar Recovery Oil which contains ingredients that target the needs of the scar, whilst also supporting the use of effective massage. Comfrey oil is anti-inflammatory and has pain relieving properties, vitamin E promotes healing, and castor oil provides moisture and a protective barrier.

This oil is blended with anti-inflammatory and fragrance-free onion extract, a compound which studies have demonstrated improves the appearance of scar tissue - including over granulation and keloid type tissue that C-sections scars can be prone to. The Super Scar Recovery Oil is suitable for all types of scars, including c-section scars, episiotomy scars, scars from tears and pregnancy stretch marks. Calming and soothing essential oils of lavender and geranium are added to provide a gentle, relaxing fragrance.

How can I use it?

How can I use it?

  • Once wounds have healed try to massage your scar daily. Massage in a circular motion, pressing hard enough to apply pressure but not so it is painful. Work your way around the scar slowly with a firm pressure. Keep on massaging using your fingers along and around the scar in both directions.
  • You can begin gentle massage after your 6-week check-up, or sooner if the scar is considered well healed. Initially, the scar may be quite tender, red, and painful and it may be best to work around the actual scar itself, working the tissues above and below it.
  • C-section: First massage the skin gently around the scar with the oil. Place your fingertips lightly on the skin above the scar and see how mobile the skin is by moving it up and down and side-to-side.
  • Episiotomy: You may want to have a warm bath or shower first as this can help you relax and soften the area. Find a time when you are unlikely to be disturbed and try relaxing on the bed or a comfy place where you have easy access to the scar area.
  • Stretch Marks: Massage daily in a circular motion until fully absorbed.
