Perineal massage from 34 weeks has been clinically proven to help stretch the perineum (the area of skin that stretches during childbirth) and make it more elastic, therefore reducing the risk of tearing or the need for an episiotomy, and help to improve the chances of recovering sooner after birth.
The research available is based on women who had undertaken perineal massage from 34 weeks of pregnancy, so there isn’t data on the effects of starting it sooner. If you want to start it sooner it would not be harmful, but equally it may not provide you with any extra benefits.
Our blog talks through how to do perineal massage, and we also have an animated video showing you how to do it too
Yes, it’s ideal for all-over body massage in pregnancy and during labour because of its calming and relaxing ingredients. You can also help to relieve nasal congestion by adding some to hot water or applying it to the skin under your nose.
We wouldn't advise applying it to your baby's delicate skin until they are at least three months old
The area of skin that will stretch, called the perineum, is external. The oil isn't needed internally, as your vagina is naturally lubricated. You only need to apply Peri Prep Your Bits to those fingers that are massaging and stretching the skin of the perineum. Please refer to the instructions on the label on the bottle for guidance on how to do perineal massage click on our blog below on how to do it.
